Writing and recording [edit]

"I Can't Make You Dearest Me" was written past Nashville writers Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin, who were well-noted for their successes in the land music loonshit. The vocal was rewritten many times before being finalized, months later. "We wrote, most every week, in Mike's basement," Shamblin told Peter Cooper in an interview with the Nashville Tennessean. "And we'd worked on this vocal for more than half dozen months. Ane day, he said, 'Come upwardly to the living room,' where his piano was. He sabbatum downward and started playing this melody, and it was ane of the nigh moving pieces of music I'd heard. I mean, information technology hit me in a difficult way ... Instantly, I knew information technology was the best affair I'd ever been a part of."[4] Reid and Shamblin were both country music songwriters, who co-ordinate to some accounts originally wrote the song as a fast, bluegrass number. Upon slowing down the tempo considerably, they realized the song gained considerable ability and thought well-nigh giving the vocal to one of 3 artists: Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler or Linda Ronstadt. Eventually, the song made its fashion to Bonnie Raitt, who recorded the track for her eleventh studio album, Luck of the Draw (1991). Raitt co-produced the song with Don Was, while Bruce Hornsby provided a pianoforte accompaniment.[5]

Composition and inspiration [edit]

The idea for the song came to Reid while reading an article about a man arrested for getting boozer and shooting at his girlfriend'due south car. The estimate asked him if he had learned annihilation, to which he replied, "I learned, Your Honor, that you can't make a adult female love y'all if she don't."[half-dozen] Raitt recorded the vocal in merely ane accept in the studio, later maxim that it was then sad a vocal that she could non recapture the emotion: "We'd try to do it again and I just said, 'You know, this ain't going to happen.'"[7]

A pensive ballad, "I Can't Make You Dear Me" was recorded against a quiet electric piano-based organisation, with prominent pianoforte fills and interpolations supplied by Bruce Hornsby.

Critical reception and accolades [edit]

"I Can't Brand You Love Me" received acclaim from music critics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic praised the track, calling information technology a "strong vocal" and picking it as one of the anthology's all-time tracks.[8] Steve Hochman of Los Angeles Times hailed the vocal equally one of Raitt's most elegant tracks.[9] Elysa Gardner wrote for Rolling Stone that "Raitt's gorgeously understated rendering of 'I Tin can't Brand Y'all Love Me,' in which sentiments such as 'I will lay downward my heart and I'll experience the power/Just you lot won't' are delivered with a quiet resignation that'due south worth a hundred glissandi in emotional weight."[x]

"I Can't Brand You Love Me" entered many lists of the greatest songs of all time. There's real ache in every discussion that drips from her pained lips."[xi]

The vocal'southward popularity helped solidify her remarkable tardily-in-career commercial success that had begun two years before. In the fourth dimension since, "I Tin can't Brand You Love Me" has gone on to become a popular standard and a mainstay of adult contemporary radio formats. For Raitt, the song was notoriously hard to sing, due to its required vocal range, difficult phrasing and animate, and the emotional content involved. At the televised Grammy Awards of 1992 Raitt performed it in an even more ascetic setting than on record, with only her and Hornsby highlighted. Equally she negotiated the final vocal line, she let out a big aural and visible sigh of relief that she had successfully gotten through it. Her alive performance of the vocal was released on the 1994 album Grammy'south Greatest Moments Book Iii.[12] Raitt has connected to sing the song in all her concert tours:

I mean, 'I Tin't Make Y'all Love Me' is no picnic. I dear that song, so does the audience. So it's about a sacred moment when you share that, that depth of pain with your audition. Considering they go actually placidity, and I have to summon ... another place in order to honor that space.
